Gutter Cleaning - why it's important?

Keeping gutters and down pipes clean is good preventative maintenance

It is recommended that all gutters are regularly cleaned. Not carrying out regular gutter cleaning can result in rusted gutters, water damaged eaves and subsequently, expensive repairs and replacements.

It is recommended that gutter cleaning is scheduled in March or April in readiness for the first winter rains.

This preventative maintenance can prevent roof leaks that are due to backflowing gutters, which can cause water to leak back into eaves and other areas.

Problems to avoid:

When gutters are unable to dispense water efficiently, one of the consequences can be that the roof will start to pool with water from rain build up. Overtime, this can eventually lead to leaks, floods, and dampness withing your property.

Routine cleaning:

To avoid this, ESM recommend that a regular gutter cleaning routine is put in place. Ensure that leaves, twigs and other debris that may have found its way into your gutters are removed. Depending on the location of your gutters you may wish to employ a contractor who specialises in gutters to undertake this work.

When to clean?

Gutter cleaning should be completed around the end of May after all the autumn leaves have fallen. A good tip is to book your gutter cleaning early to ensure that you don’t leave it too late – gutter cleaning companies get busy this time of the year.

Roof maintenance:

Poorly maintained roofs are not only unsightly but lead to water damage which quickly spreads its way into other areas of your property. Water leaks damages are one of the most common types of insurance claims, its important to get an inspection done early before winter while the weather is clear to ensure that your property is fully maintained before winter.
